How to use

  1. Pick the tonic (root) of the scale, e.g. C.
  2. Pick the scale type — major, a minor scale, a mode, pentatonic, etc.
  3. The highlighted keys are the scale tones, each labelled with its degree (1, 2, ♭3…).

Degree notation

1 = tonic, 2–7 = the scale steps, 8 = the tonic an octave up. A ♭ or ♯ marks a note that differs from the major scale.

FAQ

Where is "A minor"?
Set the root to A and the type to "Natural minor": A B C D E F G — the same notes as C major.
Which scale for soloing?
Over a C major key, C major pentatonic is a safe choice; for a bluesy sound use C minor pentatonic or the C blues scale.
